How will 2016 change recruiting and talent acquisition? I've been listening to a lot of recruiters as we have grown EmployUs and I've seen a lot of activity in the HR Tech space from 2015. I'm offering three recruiting trends for what we will see happen over the next twelve months in the recruiting and talent acquisition space.
Trend #1: The War for Talent is Over. Talent Won.
Recruiters often say they are in a "War for Talent," I know even I have used that phrase to describe the recruiting industry. I learned something while piloting EmployUs in 2015, recruiters have been fighting the wrong fight. Before a weaker job market and limited choices forced employers and job seekers to connect through traditional means, which benefitted recruiters who suddenly were flush with job seekers asking for help. With so many people looking for work, recruiters held a lot of power, but now the tides have changed.
How does this affect recruiters? You have to start playing the right game. Your brand as a recruiter, speaking both to internal and external recruiters, is becoming more and more important. Your ideal candidates this year won't be found on Monster but rather found through a trusted referral or connection who put their credibility on the line to introduce you to your next hire. If you had trouble finding the right talent for your team in 2015, it will only get harder in 2016.
Trend #2: Deployments in Minutes, Not Months.
For all you HR Software fans, when the founder and CEO of Zenefits can defiantly proclaim at the 2015 HR Tech Conference that global software deployments can be done in minutes not months, these times are a changing. Speed to market used to be a key indicator of success. With the advent of new start-ups innovating HR Tech, speed to deployment may be a better indicator for 2016.
After all, 2015 was a big year for HR Technology with VC investment surpassing levels seen in 2000. Start-ups armed with plenty of VC cash can move quickly and break established norms. If you aren't shipping, you aren't moving fast enough and will lose out in 2016.
For example, Zenefits has the size to become one of the dominant players in recruiting just has they have in payroll and insurance. They even deployed integrations with Applicant Tracking Systems for the first time at the end of 2015. If their platform wide deployment of their own Payroll product goes to show, you may see them unveil a stand alone Applicant Tracking System or recruiting tool in 2016.
Trend #3: Sharing Economy Takes On Recruiting
PWC issued a report last year about the rise of the sharing economy and how it is effecting industries in dramatic ways. Here are the 5 industries they said will be disrupted by the "Rise of the 1099."
- Music Streaming
- Car Sharing
- Peer-to-peer Accommodation
- Online Staffing
- Peer-to-Peer Lending/Crowd-Funding
The impact of the Sharing Economy on Car Sharing and P2P accommodation is evident by companies like Uber and AirBnB so what's next?
There are several companies applying Sharing Economy principles to recruiting so this convergence of mobile technology, existing models, "The Rise of the 1099" and a talent-first job market all create a perfect storm for companies to disrupt the status quo.
